What Sets Us Apart

Care for Brain Injury

Rapid, expert care is the key to surviving a brain injury. That’s why Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network employs the kind of experienced medical staff not available at most medical centers.

We are a Level I trauma center with 24-hour neurological surgery coverage, staffed by a team specially educated to provide rapid response to even the most severe cases of traumatic brain injury. Our team includes general surgeons, trauma surgeons, neurological surgeons and intensivists (specially educated intensive care doctors). They focus treatment on maximizing patients’ chances of survival and their future quality of life.

Our state-of-the-art technology allows us to aggressively monitor—and treat—a patient's neurological condition in real time. We use intracranial pressure monitoring to measure pressure levels inside a patient's skull. To immediately reduce brain pressure and prevent swelling, our neurosurgeons use a fast, effective procedure called decompressive craniectomy.

The trauma team’s role extends well beyond care provided during the immediate neurological crisis. Team members also monitor patients closely in the days following trauma to ensure they don’t sustain secondary brain injury as a result of their initial injury.

Our staff members also are actively involved in ongoing research designed to determine the best ways to improve outcomes for people with head injuries.
